Helicoverpa zea
Corn earworm
AFFECTED CROP:
Highly polyphagous pest affecting more than 100 host plant species, many of them of great economic importance. Among the most important crops affected by this pest are maize, tomato, sorghum and cotton.
DAMAGES:
Damage is caused by the larvae, mainly attacking the fruit, rendering it unfit for sale. However, not all of them are good hosts. While maize and lettuce have proven to be good hosts, tomatoes are less beneficial, and broccoli and melon are poor hosts. Maize and soya beans are most favoured by worms.
